Top Ten Best Planer Thicknesser Reviews

Looking for the Best Planer Thicknesser, there are many good reasons for buying a planer, a compact planer gives you the ability to use what ever size lumber that is needed for your project, as you may need a size that cannot be bought a Home Depot or Menard’s, but which one you decide on depends on several factors.

You might consider such things like what kind of work you are going to use the planer for, how often you are going to use it, what quality of cut that you will need and what little niggles you are happy to put up with for a reasonably priced planer.

Think about what sort of wood you are likely to be working with as some planers do exceedingly well with soft woods whilst others are excellent at working with the hardest woods. A planer that does well with both is the ultimate buy.

Snipe can be an ongoing irritant for the lower end priced machines and, unless you know how to counteract it, you are better advised to find a planer with minimal snipe. But, I have tested and reviewed quality planers with minimal snipe to help take away that headache for you.

For small thickness planers, snipe is primarily caused by movement of the cutter head assembly as it tends to cut a little deeper at the start or the end of the cut. This can be hugely annoying when you suddenly find all your hard work leaves you with an uneven surface.

I have taken that into account with the planers that I have reviewed below. Look for a planer with minimal snipe and you won’t go far wrong.

Then of course, like most of us, your choice may depend on your budget. I know that price is important but one thing I will say, from my own experience, is to buy the best that you can afford because, with a tool like a planer, it can be a costly mistake if the tool you buy just isn’t up to the job you are going to use it for.

That said, there are some awesome low priced planers on the market and I have tested and reviewed them for you. I have been surprised at the quality of the ones that I tested. For the purpose of the trial, I have selected planers that are around $300.00 or less. You can get a surprisingly good machine for that money.

If you just want a reliable planer that you can use for all of your personal woodworking jobs around the home, you want to know that you are buying a planer that won’t let you down. This will be the basis for my recommendations to you.

I am sure that you don’t want the hassle of your tools letting you down, so it might benefit you to opt for a more heavyweight planer with a quality build. It is worth noting that the weight of each planer does vary considerably ranging from 30lbs up to almost 80lbs.

Weight isn’t an issue if you have your own workshop where you can mount the planer permanently. If you have to carry it around, you might choose a planer that is a little lighter. Although they are all described as portable, it depends on how much you want to move something around that weighs half your body weight!

Weight isn’t necessarily a measure of durability or quality either, it very much depends on each individual machine but, don’t worry, because I cover this in my reviews of each planer that I tested. If possible, don’t overly let the weight of a planer influence your choice.

The fact is that when you come to use your planer, you want it to work and not drive you mad with the motor overheating or the vibration making your arms ache after a short time, or the wood being uneven when you have finished the job in hand.

Consider the pros and cons as I have listed them below for each planer I have tested. I would also recommend that you check the cuts per inch on the planer you are looking to buy because that will determine how smooth the final finish will be on the wood. Blade removal needs to be an easy and fast job to do.

Overall, my general advice would be to buy a planer with a powerful motor, with effective cutting blades that can cut into thicker cuts of wood without any problems. There are dozens, if not hundreds of planers on the market but not all of them are good, as I know! Also, make sure that replacement blades and other spare parts for the planer are easily available.

This planer thicknesser all qualify for my top contender list, for quality, durability, and price.

Delta Power Tools 37-071 6 Inch MIDI-Bench Jointer

Top Ten Best Planer Thicknesser.

I like Delta tools as they have a reputation for producing good quality, highly efficient tools at an affordable price. I have come to trust their tools and machines over the years, so, of course a Delta Jointer had to be on my review list and I was looking forward to trying this one out.

On opening the box, the first thing I noticed was the Delta 37-07 looked like a quality piece of kit for my tool collection. It’s made from cast iron (yes, it’s heavy, weighing in at just under 76lbs which is definitely the higher end weight bracket for planer’s) and looks like it is built to last, definitely offering good long lasting durability.

The weight is, in my opinion, actually a positive as I found that it increased the stability during use. I found the Delta to be accurate and, considering the price, the vibration really wasn’t too bad at all. It was extremely easy to get it set up and I liked that it was easily adjustable. It has a maximum depth cut of 1/8”. Fast cutting capacity will produce 20,000 per minute, for the twin bladed cutter-head.

I used it on a big piece of oak and I wasn’t disappointed. The vibration was minimal and it felt like a good quality, reliable piece of machinery. I was able to work a bit faster than normal as I felt I could trust the job that the Delta 37-0716 was doing for me. I enjoying using it and it would definitely one that I would add to the top of my list of planers.

VERDICT.
I Liked working with the Delta and would definitely recommend it. There was minimal snipe and as long as you don’t plan to be moving it around then the higher weight won’t be an issue.
PROS.
It is quick to assemble, a solid, robust planer and very good value for money.
CONS.
The fence was occasionally a little difficult to move but once you get it set correctly, it works well. Also, it is heavy at 76lbs.

Reasons Why I Can Personally Recommend It.

  • Blades. Twin blades.
  • Table. 6 1/4 in. D x 28 1/2 in.
  • Fence. 4 5/16 in. D x 22 7/8 in.
  • Speed. Cuts at 20,000 CPM (cuts per minutes).
  • Warranty. 5 Year Limited Warranty.

Other Considerations.

  • Primarily a stationary planer, due to its weight.

PORTER CABLE 15 Amp 12 in. Thicknesser

Top Ten Best Planer Thicknesser.

If you have a fairly compact area to work in, then the Porter Cable 15 Amp is going to be perfect for the job. I had never used a Porter Cable before so was interested to see how it would perform. On taking it out of the box, I was pleasantly surprised at how compact it was.

I planned to give this a good test run as, at the time I had a fair bit of work to do on a home project that I was eager to get started on. It is probably useful to point out that I found that the Porter Cable did snipe a little, about 2-3”, on both ends of the wood, but then this wasn’t a massive problem.

It is a keenly priced planer and I was using cedar wood for this job. I easily overcame this by holding the board pretty firm and then raising or lowering the blades as needed on each end, in order to compensate. This did the trick quite nicely once I got used to doing it and overall I ended up with quite a nice smooth finish.

Changing the blades was an easy job and took me no longer than a few minutes, around five at tops. One thing I would say is that I would recommend getting a dust hood as without using one, I found it a bit awkward. They are pretty cheap at around $25.00 and the Delta #50-359 fits apparently, though for the purpose of this test I didn’t purchase this.

I found it pretty noisy but, to be honest, it is kind of expected with a planer, especially at the lower level. If you are prepared for it beforehand, it isn’t a major problem. The Porter Cable is compatible with a Delta model, so parts are easy to come by when you need them.

VERDICT.

  • Design  Compact metal construction.
  • Power. 15 amp motor.
  • Motor. Overload protection defends the motor from abuse.

  • Some Limitations. Snipe at the end of the lumber at 2- 1/2.

DEWALT DW734 15 Amp 12-1/2-Inch Benchtop Planer

Top Ten Best Planer Thicknesser.

Like most of the planers that I tested, this next Dewalt comes with a 15 Amp motor. It is perhaps at the lower end of the cuts per inch but I found it to have an excellent quality of cut if you take your time with it.

Dewalt always seems to take care to ensure that their range of planers have minimum snipe because that seems to be one of the things that irritate most of us trying to plane our wood to a level, smooth finish. To counteract that, this model comes with additional extension tables and locking mechanisms to help prevent the sniping issues that you might experience with other planers.

I’m not saying it doesn’t exist but it was marginally better than others I have used.

The tables are easily adjusted and the locking mechanism ensures that you get the smoothest finish possible. I found that the dust handling wasn’t one of the best but it was manageable if you are careful. If not addressed, this can cause a bit of mess but you can overcome this by fitting a vac to the dust hood. It can get clogged up pretty easily so keep an eye on it so as to avoid that issue.

I found the Dewalt DW734 to quieter than all the other planer’s I reviewed. This is mostly down to it having three blades. But as a good habit, I always wear ear defenders as the constant noise of any machinery can irritate the ears if used for long periods of time, together with safety glasses.

It is pretty light compared to the other planer’s I have tested, weighing in at around 36lbs. That doesn’t seem to have any effect on the stability of the machine though as I found it solid and stable during use. Make sure that you check and empty the vacuum hood fairly regularly or the port can get clogged up, just general common sense really.

It comes set up, according to the manual, but I would advise checking it before you start working on your project. I found it was a little out but with a few minor adjustments, I was ready to get going.

VERDICT.
Excellent quality, good if you get the boards lined up properly and a bit lighter than some planer’s so it is easier to move around if you have to.
PROS.
Excellent quality, good if you get the boards lined up properly and a bit lighter than some planer’s so easier to move around if you have to.
CONS.
Ports can get easily clogged if you don’t check often.

Reasons Why I Can Personally Recommend It.

  • Planing. Great quality at an affordable price.
  • Lightweight. One of the lightest in its class, you will be able to move this around your shop.
  • Setting Up. Was super quick setup.

Other Considerations.

  • Shavings. Ports can get easily clogged if you don’t check often. Would recommend fitting a shop dust vacuum.

WEN 6552 3-Blade 15 Amp Benchtop Thickness Planer 13″

Top Ten Best Planer Thicknesser.

I hadn’t used a WEN before so I was quite keen to give it a test run. I had heard that this was a decent machine for woodworking and certainly taking it out of the box I was impressed by the look of the machine, as it really looks the business.

The Wen 6552 comes with a powerful 15 Amp motor that can cut up to 6” deep and 13” wide. It has an onboard planning gauge which I found really useful. It did not move or overly vibrate during use. The fact that it is, like many of the planer’s, made from cast iron, does help to keep the plane’s still when you are working.

I also liked the fan assisted dust port as this served two purposes, one to remove the dust and secondly to help to keep the machine cool. The WEN can be mounted to a work surface easily or it can stand on its own without creating any issues as it doesn’t jump about during use.

I found it surprisingly sturdy. Personally, I always prefer to mount a planer but it is an optional choice, depending on your needs.

For this trial, I was working with a nice piece of oak that had some flaws that I wanted to try and work out. I got a pretty good result from it, enough for me to use the wood for the purpose I needed it for. This has a two blade cutter head planer and the blades are reversible.

It weighs in at around 66lb so is a good solid weight to ensure security if you don’t mount it to a worktop. I tried it without mounting and it didn’t bounce about during use.

It is loud, but I have yet to find a planer that isn’t. Wear ear defenders for your own protection and it is fine, I use them as standard practice. It has a little snipe but is workable if you take your time, it was nothing of any great concern.

I found that by feeding my boards at an angle, I managed to get good straight lines. The Wen has a fan assisted dust port and it was great at moving all the chips and sawdust away. It has a high cut rate at 25,500 cuts which did a great job apparently averaging 26ft per minute. I think is a great price for a durable machine and it comes with a two-year warranty.

I haven’t had to use the warranty of course, but it is good to know that it exists in case of problems later on. New blades can be purchased easily from Wen or other distributors.

I was very impressed with this planer. For the price, you get a whole lot for your money and it is the excellent quality that you might expect from a more expensive machine. I would definitely consider Wen as a good contender for a planer of my choice. As a total Dewalt fan, the Wen got pretty close to changing my alliance.

VERDICT.
Excellent quality, I liked it and was surprised at the low price, I would have expected it to be at least $100.00 more than it is priced.
PROS.
Good, durable planer representing excellent value. Reliable and fast with minimal snipe.
CONS.
Bit loud but fine with ear defenders.

Reasons Why I Can Personally Recommend It.

  • Wen Warranty. 2 Years. That’s hard to beat.
  • Lightweight and Compact. Easy to move from place to place.
  • Blades. Triple blades make this a quick cutter.

Other Considerations.

  • Price. A great price for a good machine. I know you will not regret buying this planer.
  • Reversible. Dust ports are reversible which allows the chips to collected right or left, and can be fitted with a shop vac.

Delta Power Tools 22-555 13 In Portable Thickness Planer

Top Ten Best Planer Thicknesser.

Here Is another Delta planer that I tested out. This is a mid-priced planer, backed up with the reputation of Delta and it comes with a good set of great features. Straight out of the box,

I was impressed with the look of it. It comes with a powerful 15 AMP motor that has good adjustment settings. It has dust collection as standard and extension tables. I perhaps didn’t feel that it was quite as durable as I would have liked, mostly down to getting a little bit of vibration during use.

I also found that if I used it for extended periods, it got a little hot but for short bursts of work it was fine. I found it easy and quick to change the knives and it was pretty good on the noise, not too bad at all, though I always wear ear defenders as a rule of thumb.

I would have liked more knives as part of the package but you are only supplied with two. At 58lbs, it wasn’t too heavy to move around either, not as heavy as some I have tested.

The Delta 22-555 did feel like a powerful and reliable planer, as I have come to expect from Delta and I think that even the most amateur budding craftsman could work out how to use this model with ease. It can be used for wood up to 6” thick and 13” wide and that covers most jobs you are likely to need it for.

It worked great on softwoods but needed a bit of adjusting on harder woods to avoid snipe. Even on the hardest woods, the blades didn’t falter though which was something I really liked about it. Like most planers,

I would advise that you mount it to a stable surface, though you don’t have to, I did find it adds to the performance, particularly when using very hard woods like Oak. Stability is important for a planer as it can help with any snipe issues as well.

VERDICT.
Overall, despite the couple of niggles I mentioned, this is a solid dependable planer that you would expect from Delta.
PROS.
Weight is a bit lighter than some at 58lb a solid, hardworking piece of machinery. Well worth the money.
CONS.
A bit more vibration than I would have liked and can get a bit hot if used for long periods.

Reasons Why I Can Personally Recommend It.

  •  Motor. Strong powerful motor 15 amps.
  • Lightweight and Compact. Compact, easy to transport to all parts of your shop.
  • Warranty. 5 Year Limited Warranty.

Other Considerations.
